Ferrari F40

Ferrari's 201 mph F40 is the definitive supercar and has a formidable reputation alongside the 250 GTO as possibly the best road Ferrari built to date. With the F40, Pininfarina produced an era-defining creation, one that even today is instantly recognisable by old and young enthusiasts alike. F40's were closely derived from the experimental GTO Evoluzione and the road-going 288 GTO (that the F40 replaced). The design features a tubular steel chassis with bonded composite inserts, most notably around the sills and floor pan, The 2,936 cc motor produces approximately 500 bhp at 7,000 rpm with the help of two water-cooled IHI turbochargers running 1.1 bar of boost. At 1,202 kg, the F40 had, and still has, a phenomenal power-to-weight ratio. Shatteringly fast by any comparison (especially for 1988), the F40 can sprint from 0-60 mph in just 4.4 seconds and hit 201 mph flat out making it the first production car to surpass this mystical boundary.

From 1991 onwards cars were fitted with catalytic convertors to meet ever tightening legislation and at this time adjustable suspension became an option. Production was discontinued in 1992 after 1311 examples had been completed in five years (600 or so being bound for the USA and being noticeably different to their lighter and faster European cousins).

This example was delivered in December 1990 to its first owner a prominent Italian industrialist family. A later car, this example is equipped with a catalytic converter, but the not the later, adjustable suspension. This example was desirably optioned from new with the sought-after Perspex sliding windows.

Remaining in Italy with its first owner from new until 2010, this example saw some use early on, but covered a mere 1,000 kilometres between 1999 and 2010. DK travelled to Italy in 2010 to inspect and purchase the car. This example was imported to the UK and at that time, we carried out a major service including cambelts and fuel tanks. Ferrari’s Red Book Classiche Certification was awarded at this time. DK sold the car to its first UK owner, Mr Post, who would keep the car for just a year. It would return to us and, in 2011, we sold the car into the care of its most recent owner.

Since 2011, the car has covered just 3,500 kilometres and for most of the time has remained in the care of our secure car storage facility. Returning to our workshops annually for service work and maintenance, it was only right to return to us for sale once more. Most recently receiving new fuel tanks in 2019, the car benefitted from a major service in 2020 as well as a wealth of other works to ensure the car presents as expected. Its mileage since being in the UK is fully documented by its MOT history.
