Ferrari 250 PF Coupe (1960)

The 250 GT PininFarina Coupe marks an important part of Ferrari's history as he car was Ferrari's first pure road car built with commercial goals. After 250 GT Boano/Ellena, Pininfarina Grugliasco plant was expanded and the production of a new coupe could be moved back. The resulting car was introduced at Milan in 1958, and 335 nearly identical examples were built by 1960. Buyers included Prince Bertil of Sweden. The GT Coupe eschewed the fender vents for simple and clean lines and a notchback look with a panoramic rear window. The oval grille was replaced by a more traditional long narrow look with protruding headlights. Telescopic shock absorbers were also fitted instead of the Houdailles found on previous 250s, and disc brakes were added in 1960.

This example is believed to be one of just nine RHD Examples produced, originally the second of just three cars supplied via the Australian Distributor W.H Lowe. The car was ordered by its first owner Laurie O'Neil of Sydney, who was a well-known Australian car collector in the 1960s and 50s (in fact he was the only man to import a new Mercedes 300 SL to Australia). The car was specified, as the original build sheets state, painted in Rosso Corsa with Rosso Leather and Grigio piping. This car being a later Series 2 example also benefits from disc brakes, the more powerful "outside-plug" motor, a four-speed gearbox with overdrive (effectively 5 speed) and wider and stronger 15" wire wheels. Additionally on arrival in Melbourne Mr O'Neill insisted that an Italian sophisticated radio was installed which amounted to a huge extra cost £170! Before collection in October 1960 the car featured in a multiple page "Wheels" magazine article written by Peter Hall who concluded that this was "the worlds most desired car".

Two years later the car was advertised in Australia at $4,500 and then bought by R. A Fagan of Lyndhurst, Fagan was a careful and passionate owned who kept the car until his death in 1994 when the car was then acquired by Capt Paul Moxham. In the care of the third owner (Mr Moxham) the car was brought back to show standard and was repainted, the colour was matched to the original Rosso Corsa. In 2004 the car passed to its fourth owner Mr Perryman under who's care the car was extremely well maintained which included an engine rebuild in 2006.

More recently the car returned to Europe when it was purchased by a long standing client of DK's, the car has since been UK registered and treated to a major going through to ensure that the car is in splendid "needs nothing" condition. Today this five owner example is in our opinion the finest example of its type extant. There are believed to be just three matching numbers RHD PF Coupes remaining, of which just two are in Europe and this is the only series two car of those. This example benefits from a lifetime of no-expense spared maintenance and Australian climate. The cars paintwork is superb and amazingly it retains its original and complete interior which benefits from charming patina.

Accompanied with the car is a fantastic file dating back to the early 1960s and the car's original Owner's Manual and Spare Parts Catalogue this is a truly unique, rare and important 1960s GT Ferrari.
