The DB6 Volante is last evolution of the stunning DB series of Astons and is often regarded as the most practical and usable of all the 60's Astons. Although the first 37 DB6 Volantes were built on the shorter DB5 chassis, genuine DB6s started to appear from October 1966. The time-consuming Superleggera construction was dropped; although aluminium was still used for the panels, the steel tubing underneath was replaced by folded metal. Just 140 Mk1 Volantes were constructed up until July 1969. The model seeing the introduction of the term "Volante" (in place of "Convertible") which was derived from the Italian term for flying.
The main styling changes from the DB5 were the reappearance of opening front quarter lights and the arrival of a Kamm-style tail with spoiler which greatly improved the aerodynamics by enhancing stability at high speeds. The Motorsport road-test remarked that 'The tail lip halves the aerodynamic lift around maximum speed and brings in its train greater headroom and more luggage space,' The other great advantage of the DB6 is the increased rear legroom which makes it possible to carry passengers comfortably. DB6s were available with the choice of an Automatic or Manual 5 Speed gearbox. The DB6 was a highly fashionable car to be seen in, famous owners including HRH Prince Charles, Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Twiggy and Peter Sellers.
This particular example was supplied when new as a right hand drive car to South Africa in December 1967; the car was presented in Dubonnet Rosso with a natural interior. Today the car is back in the UK and is UK registered; the car benefits form a recent refurbishment at Mototechnique and today this example in superb restored condition. This matching numbers Aston is presented in fresh Dark Blue Metallic with a matching blue hood and stunning grey trim. The car is equipped with the more desirable 5 Speed ZF manual gearbox.
