During the last 18 months, Fabian Oefner has developed a sculpture that brings his acclaimed 'Disintegrating Series to the Third Dimension'. In the past, the artist carefully crafted photographs of exploding vehicles, captured in the very moment as they come apart.
Collaborating with chemical scientists, model makers, and CNC technicians, Oefner managed for the first time to capture the disintegration of a car in a 3-dimensional space. The object serves as an exploration into our perception of time and reality. Oefner’s fascination lies in the paradox between the different speeds of our universe that live within and outside of the sculpture.
Inside the block of resin, time seems to stand still. The car is pulled apart by some invisible physical force, yet all its components are frozen in time. Outside of the block, time moves at a normal speed.
The car inside the block is a custom-made 1:8 Ferrari F40 model. Oefner collaborated with a German model maker to recreate every single component of the car, from the crankshaft to the pistons down to the smallest nuts and bolts, to create an ultra-realistic copy of the car. The sculpture measures 40 x 18 x 14 inches and weighs over 200kg.
