Ferrari F40 (1990)

Ferrari's 201 mph F40 is the definitive supercar and has a formidable reputation alongside the 250 GTO as possibly the best road Ferrari built to date. With the F40, Pininfarina produced an era-defining creation, one that even today is instantly recognisable by old and young enthusiasts alike. F40's were closely derived from the experimental GTO Evoluzione and the road-going 288 GTO (that the F40 replaced). The design features a tubular steel chassis with bonded composite inserts, most notably around the sills and floor pan, The 2,936 cc motor produces approximately 500 bhp at 7,000 rpm with the help of two water-cooled IHI turbochargers running 1.1 bar of boost. At 1,202 kg, the F40 had, and still has, a phenomenal power-to-weight ratio. Shatteringly fast by any comparison (especially for 1988), the F40 can sprint from 0-60 mph in just 4.4 seconds and hit 201 mph flat out making it the first production car to surpass this mystical boundary.

This example was supplied new by Maranello Concessionaires in October 1990. As the authorised dealer for right-hand-drive markets at that time, this F40 arrived into the UK on export plates, as each of the 8 Australian-supplied cars would have been. Early documentation from the Maranello Concessionaires archive notes the scheduled arrival of this F40 alongside Testarossas that were delivered at the same time.

First owners Mr & Mrs McNeill received the invoice for the car at their Jersey address and the car was supplied on a UK export registration, H27 XYP. The car moved to Japan and saw extensive use covering 100,000 km before a significant mechanical overhaul by specialists Iding Power. Having covered a further 35,000 km since, DK identified and inspected this example in person in outer Tokyo in September 2024. Accompanied by its original books and Ferrari red book Classiche certification, it was too good to miss.

Following on from the inspection and purchase by DK, the car was flown to the UK and has since begun its next chapter in our workshops ahead of delivery to its new custodian. The first decision for the new owner, which colour!
