Ferrari's 201 mph F40 is the definitive supercar and has a formidable reputation alongside the 250 GTO as possibly the best road Ferrari built to date. With the F40, Pininfarina produced an era-defining creation, one that even today is instantly recognisable by old and young enthusiasts alike. F40's were closely derived from the experimental GTO Evoluzione and the road-going 288 GTO (that the F40 replaced). The design features a tubular steel chassis with bonded composite inserts, most notably around the sills and floor pan, The 2,936 cc motor produces approximately 500 bhp at 7,000 rpm with the help of two water-cooled IHI turbochargers running 1.1 bar of boost. At 1,202 kg, the F40 had, and still has, a phenomenal power-to-weight ratio. Shatteringly fast by any comparison (especially for 1988), the F40 can sprint from 0-60 mph in just 4.4 seconds and hit 201 mph flat out making it the first production car to surpass this mystical boundary.

This example was supplied new to Roberto Zattini, an Italian businessman who split his time between Italy and Nigeria. Invoiced to his home in Nigeria, the F40, supplied by Crepaldi Auto, would live in Italy and then Switzerland under his care. Zattini collected the car on its ‘EE’ registration (Escursionisti Esteri) EE 427 AF, temporary Italian plates valid for one year. They would be used one occasion. Understood to have been so desperate to get his hands on Ferrari’s latest and greatest, Zattini had orders down for the F40 at multiple dealerships. As a result, he would own 3 examples at the same time; we’re not sure this would happen today!

Zattini placed the F40 in storage in a garage in Geneva at the end of 1991 where it would remain for three years. In 1994, the F40 was sold to a friend of Zattini, Mr Djurovic who was living in Switzerland but also spending time in Nigeria. Djurovic used the car sparingly over the next five years. At the time of sale, the F40 had covered just 1,802 km.

In December 1999, the F40 was purchased by Mr Abramyic. During his ownership, the car was imported into the UK and registered under his sister’s name and address in Hertfordshire.

On 4th December 2000, this F40 was purchased by its current custodian with the mileage at the time, a mere 2,300 km. For most, the idea of doubling the mileage on an F40 would seem terrifying, but with so few miles at the time of purchase, the odometer today reads just 5,250 km. Breaking it down, the current custodian has covered just 3,000 km in 24 years.

Visiting DK Engineering in February 2022, this F40 underwent a major service and inspection for Ferrari red book Classiche certification. The fuel tanks were replaced as well as the fuel lines and the tyres replaced. At this time, DK also took the opportunity to fit a fire suppression system. Lead acquisition consultant James Cottingham was asked at the time to value the car on behalf of the current custodian, and his inspection specifically notes the remarkably condition of the underside, engine bay and original suspension markings; reflecting a car that is genuinely low mileage and one that doesn’t appear to have seen wet weather usage.

This F40 presents in superb condition and will further receive an annual service as part of the sale.
