Ferrari's 201 mph F40 is the definitive supercar and has a formidable reputation alongside the 250 GTO as possibly the best road Ferrari built to date. With the F40, Pininfarina produced an era-defining creation, one that even today is instantly recognisable by old and young enthusiasts alike. F40's were closely derived from the experimental GTO Evoluzione and the road-going 288 GTO (that the F40 replaced). The design features a tubular steel chassis with bonded composite inserts, most notably around the sills and floor pan, The 2,936 cc motor produces approximately 500 bhp at 7,000 rpm with the help of two water-cooled IHI turbochargers running 1.1 bar of boost. At 1,202 kg, the F40 had, and still has, a phenomenal power-to-weight ratio. Shatteringly fast by any comparison (especially for 1988), the F40 can sprint from 0-60 mph in just 4.4 seconds and hit 201 mph flat out making it the first production car to surpass this mystical boundary.

This early example was supplied new in 1989 to its first owner as ‘Diretto’ sale from the factory. Massimo Sigala, a notable racing driver from Messina, Italy had this early 7-series chassis Ferrari F40 registered to his Como residence in the north of the country. Sigala had raced in a variety of cars, from a Renault 5 to a Porsche 962C and competing in BMW’s Procar series by the time his F40 arrived; he would go on to compete in a Ferrari 333SP in the IMSA GT Championship.

This F40 arrived in the UK in 1998 and first arrived in DK Engineering’s workshops two years later having covered just 6,700 km when we purchased the car. DK purchased this F40 again in 2004 and with the car having accumulated a further 13,000 km, where it was sold to a long term keeper who had every intention of using the car. Over the course of the next 16 years, the previous keeper of this wonderful F40 would more than double the mileage, using every given opportunity to use and enjoy the car.

Maintenance was handled in the main by Back on Track Motorsport in Guildford, very much in accordance with the servicing schedule along with several visits to DK. Cambelts and fuel tanks were carried out in a timely manner and the service history shows no fewer than 16 services during their ownership.

In 2021, DK Engineering purchased the car back with the then owner upgrading to an F40 LM!. We carried out a comprehensive mechanical overhaul, along side a cosmetic refresh ahead of sale to a great client. Carried out in our workshops, the invoice totalled £54,300 excluding fuel cells as they remained in date.

Offered today, this wonderfully usable example of a desirable non-cat, non-adjust F40 is offered with fantastic service history, Ferrari Classiche Certification and all its original books and tools. Presenting today with 50,200 km, this example will further benefit from a major service as part of the sale, and awaits the enjoyment of its next custodian.
