With the 996 Porsche introduced the first completely new 911 in what was then already a 35-year-old career. A year later Porsche produced a pure sports version to enable it to homologate its racing cars and all were surprised to find it was not to be granted 'RS' status like its fabled predecessor, the 2.7 RS, which had been conceived in 1973 for much the same reason. Instead Porsche appended a new name to it, the 'GT3' badge relating to its intended category of racing. With the GT3 line Porsche had bred what is now widely regarded as the most focussed breed of road cars equally suited to Road use, on track or both.
For some years the Hans Metzger-designed flat-six motor was only used in Porsche's GT3 and GT2 cars, all other 911s, Boxsters and Caymans using an entirely unrelated, much cheaper to manufacture, direct-injection flat-six. Routine tests to which this engine was subjected during development for use in this ultimate GT3 was to be run flat out and non-stop for 3000km.
The first generation 997 3.6 litre GT3 proved a massive improvement over the 996 and the Second generation 997 GT3 with its enlarged 3.8 Litre engine was better still, these later cars of which just 2,200 examples were produced worldwide. These would prove to be the last iteration of the manual Porsche GT3 and since their delivery, these cars have been incredibly sought after with values appreciating and reviews glowing with many agreeing that the 977 GT3s and Gt3 RS's are not only the best road Porsche ever, but that with the demise of a manual gearbox also a car that marks the significant end of an era.
This example presented here is a UK supplied "C16" example first delivered by Porsche Reading in May of 2010. The car is presented in White with Silver/Grey wheels and Black Alcantara and leather Comfort specification interior, the cars comprehensive specification includes the desirable "Front Axle Lift" as well as PCM with Navigation, CD and Bluetooth modules, auto Dimming Mirrors, Rain Sensor, Automatic Speed Control, Active Engine mounts, and Porsche Dynamic Light System to name but a few. Many will be pleased to note that this example does not feature the cumbersome roll cage or bucket seats found in "Clubsport" examples. This GT3 has been very well maintained indeed and has been serviced exclusively by the supplying dealer Porsche Reading. The car has covered 29,000 miles with just three owners from new. Stored with DK Engineering for the last 12 months in January 2015 the decision was taken to carefully remove the original paint protection film and replace with the latest much improved film to protect the cars paint. As a result the car now presents extremely well and recently MOT'd and supplied with its original books, spare key and a large file, the car is in need of nothing.
