The ultimate 911. There is no more iconic silhouette than that of the early 911 and of all the variations and differences in these cars the shape of the 2.7 RS with its Aerodynamic ducktail is the most instantly recognisable. It captured the imagination like the Jaguar E type had a decade before, and the initial run of 500 sold out almost immediately. Porsche had to reinstate production to build more - another 1,090, in fact - in order to meet demand.
RS stands for Rennsport in German, meaning "racing sport". The Carrera name was reintroduced from the 356 Carrera which had itself been named after Porsche's victories in the Carrera Panamericana races in Mexico in the 1950s. These sensational cars also achieved great success on the race track, RS both in touring and in lightweight spec were raced in almost every sports car race, the lightly modified RSR examples scored victories in the Targa Florio, the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring all in their first year. Weighing in at only 975kg, 2.7 RS's have an impressive top speed of 150mph and performance figures of 0-65mph in just 5.8 seconds.
Just 93 RHD examples were delivered to the UK in period. This example is one of those rare factory RHD cars that was supplied in May 1973 to the UK market and presented in Light Ivory, as it is today. It was specified with options M102 (heated rear window), M409 (sports seats left and right), M423 (outside drivers mirror) and M651 (electric windows). The car was registered "SPD 368L" and was a very well-known example in the UK owners club (featuring in "Carrera RS" by Dr. Konradsheim, otherwise known as the "Porsche Bible") until it was sold and exported to Hong Kong in 1990. By this time it had had just 2 private owners in the UK.
The car remained in Hong Kong until 1997 until it moved to Australia where is has remained until now. The car has been extremely well maintained throughout its life and has an unusually well documented life with a superb history file. This is especially true for its early years, a time when most other RS's have little paperwork for in their file; but it is quite the opposite for this car.
The car is presented in extremely good condition and presents very well in its correct and original colour of Light Ivory with Black Script and sits on freshly (and absolutely correctly) restored wheels. It is accompanied by all the essential documentation, has its matching numbers original crank case and even its complete book pack with service book, instruction manual, spare keys and ever so rare English RS supplement.
