Launched during October 1981's Paris Salon, Ferrari's 512i BB most notably marked the arrival of fuel injection on Ferrari's Flat-12. Replacing the familiar Weber carbs (seen on almost every previous Ferrari model) fuel injection not only improved an engine's flexibility but made it much easier to maintain as well as prolonging the lifetime of the engine. The BBi remained in production for almost three years. A few minor detail changes were made to the bodywork with clear reflectors inserted into the front bumper and supplementary driving lights now exposed in the grille. There were also new wing mirrors.
Despite adopting a Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection system for their flagship cars in 1981, it was still not possible to import a flat-12 Ferrari into America. It was, however, now considerably easier to federalize the emissions privately and import a European delivered example. Ferrari's amusing solution was a factory program in 1983, which sold a still-illegal 512 BBi to an American customer, who had to take delivery in Europe. From there, the company could assist with brokers and registered importers. In retrospect, it was obvious why Ferrari wouldn't want to invest in federalizing the 512 BBi, as its successor, the Testarossa, would be on sale in the U.S. in 1985.
This example was a European supplied injection Boxer imported at new to California. The car remained in the sunshine state until purchased by DK and imported into the UK. The car has covered just 18,000 kms (barely more than 10,000 miles.) and clearly benefits from the dry conditions and no expense spared maintenance. The car remains in absolutely superb condition inside and out and must be one of the finsest examples there is. Mechanically the car benefits from a recent major service and engine-out service at DK which included the replacement of the vital cam belts, as well as large number of consumable items including a refurbishment of the A/C system and all-new belts, hoses, seals, and gaskets. As a result the car is totally on the button and "needs nothing".
One of the most hotly tipped Ferraris for future appreciation this example is in superb condition and ready to be enjoyed by the new owner.
