The world famous Daytona name was unofficially conjured up by the press in recognition of the firms stunning 1-2-3 victory at 1967's Daytona 24 Hours and - the fact that it was the last front-engined Ferrari GT before the Fiat years also means it occupies a special place in Maranello history. The Daytona was a stopgap model between Ferrari's outgoing 275 GTB/4 and their mid-engined 365 GT4 Berlinetta Boxer, the development of which was running well behind schedule. Influenced by the fact they were beginning to suffer a number of financial problems, Ferrari decided to produce what was essentially an updated version of an existing model. However, despite the troubled background to its inception, Daytona's themselves were in no way affected.

Ferrari produced what became the definitive GT of its time. The Daytona's motor is essentially an enlarged Tipo 226 60° V12 from the previous 275 GTB/4 and is designated Tipo 251. They have a displacement of 4.4-litres producing 352bhp at 7500rpm. At the time the Daytona became the world's fastest production car with a top speed of 175mph and 0-60 in 5.3 seconds - enough to eclipse every other manufacturer, even Lamborghini. Pininfarina designed the Daytona's bodywork exuding power from every angle. As a result the Daytona remains one of the most jaw-dropping GT's to this day. The 365 GTB/4 (proper name!) was launched during October 1968's Paris Salon and won enormous praise. It was the fastest production road car available and would be the last of Ferrari's front-engined GT's, a fact not lost on writers at the time. Relatively few official options were available, just wider Cromodora alloys, spoked Borrani wires, front bumper bars and air conditioning having been on the upgrade list. Production ceased in late 1973 to make way for the overdue mid-Flat-12-engined 365 GT4 Berlinetta Boxer. By this time, Ferrari had completed 1284 GTB/4's, 149 of which were right-hand drive.

This example offered for sale by DK engineering is chassis 16331 and was delivered in February 1973 presented in Argento Auteuil with Light Blue leather (a stunning combination retained to this day). The vehicle was fitted with the optional extras of bumper bars and air conditioning.

Early correspondence with Maranello Concessionaires shows that this example was originally ordered by a Mr Heryet but was unfortunately cancelled at the last moment. As a result the car was sold via Ian Anthony Sales to its first owner The Honourable J Dawney. In 1980 16331 was sold to its second owner David Lomas. David was an avid car enthusiast and an old friend of DK Engineering - he had many other great cars in his Stable including an original long Nose Jaguar D type, a 275 GTB/4, a 250 SWB and a replica 250 GTO (built by DK Engineering) to name but a few.During the 1980's the car was serviced by Graypaul Motors in the main and a wealth of bills accompany the car for this period. In 1993 the car was stripped back to bare metal and repainted by RS panels to the highest standard. Following this 16331 was subjected to a major service by none other than DK Engineering. During David's ownership a detailed log was kept of every mile covered in the car from 1980 (@33108 miles) until 1998 (@60,001 miles) when following the sad loss of David the car was sold via ourselves to its 3rd owner. The last log by David Lomas states, "Back at Moss Cottage, Car Perfect!", this was clearly one of his favourite road Ferraris.

The car remained part of a private collection until 2007 covering just 900 miles further when once again the car was sold by DK engineering to the present owner. At this time a major overhaul was carried out including the fitment of a new clutch and a total suspension/brake overhaul. Since 2007 16331 has covered a further 3,000 miles and the owner has made every effort to keep the log up to date. This unique attention to detail including every mile completed and every drop of fuel added makes the history file accompanying this car in our opinion second to none and almost certainly unique for a Daytona. At DK Engineering we are pleased to be able to offer such a wonderful Daytona for sale - 16331 has just received a major service including suspension overhaul and is ready to be used and enjoyed once again by a new owner.
