Launched in 2008, the Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series was the third model to be reworked by the AMG Performance Studio after the SLK55 and CLK63 Black Series limited editions. Using an SL600 as the basis, the ‘65’ did away with the folding-metal roof mechanism as part of a crash diet that saw a saving of 250 kg. Extensive use of carbon composites, specifically CFRP or carbon fibre reinforced plastic, the Black Series gains a fixed roof structure, and significantly wider arches to cover the staggered 19” and 20” wheels. In fact, the only crossover body panels between the SL600 and SL65 are the door skins and wingmirrors!
The engine saw significant gains. Larger turbochargers, freer air intakes and a less restrictive exhaust saw the power jump from 517 bhp to 661 bhp and torque up from 612lb feet to an electronically restricted 738lb ft. Mercedes borrowed the only gearbox that could handle the power from the Maybach in the form of the 5 speed, 5G-Tronic.
0-60 comes round in just 3.8 seconds and with the throttle pinned, it takes just 11 seconds to double it.
