Ferrari's 201 mph F40 is the definitive supercar and has a formidable reputation alongside the 250 GTO as possibly the best road Ferrari built to date. With the F40, Pininfarina produced an era-defining creation, one that even today is instantly recognisable by old and young enthusiasts alike. F40's were closely derived from the experimental GTO Evoluzione and the road-going 288 GTO (that the F40 replaced). The design features a tubular steel chassis with bonded composite inserts, most notably around the sills and floor pan, The 2,936 cc motor produces approximately 500 bhp at 7,000 rpm with the help of two water-cooled IHI turbochargers running 1.1 bar of boost. At 1,202 kg, the F40 had, and still has, a phenomenal power-to-weight ratio. Shatteringly fast by any comparison (especially for 1988), the F40 can sprint from 0-60 mph in just 4.4 seconds and hit 201 mph flat out making it the first production car to surpass this mystical boundary.
This spectacular F40 falls very early in the model’s production run and is believed to be amongst the first fifty examples produced, boasting a “7-series” chassis number. As such, it exhibits a handful of differences from its predecessors. These features include: sills, rear valence underside and front clam underside all being unpainted and in body colour (rather than black), early-specification brake cooling ducts, rough finish cockpit Kevlar, and rough finish front spare wheel well with lip. Finally, like all F40s produced in 1988, it boasts the desirable ‘Non-cat, non-adjust’ specification of no catalytic converters and a non-adjustable suspension, alongside “wind-up” windows.
According to its original service books, the F40 was delivered new to its native Italy in December of 1988, via Sa. Mo. Car S.p.A., Ferrari’s authorized distributor in Rome. It would remain with its original owner for the following twenty-six years.
The F40 was acquired by its second and current owner in 2014 via DK Engineering in December of 2014. Subsequently, the car was exported to the U.K. where it was road registered. Upon arriving in the U.K., a major service was performed at our facilities with both the cam belts and fuel tanks being replaced. The owner also decided to undertake Ferrari Classiche certification, which was duly awarded.
Having been driven roughly 7,300 kms at the time of its purchase, the current owner has not shied away from driving and enjoying his F40 as attended. In his ownership, it has accumulated 4,000 kms on the road both in continental Europe and the U.K., and was enjoyed by him in during the Ferrari Tributo to the Mille Miglia in 2016.
Most recently, the car has been in the care of DK Engineering at our dedicated storage facility. In December of 2019, it received its most recent major service and cambelt replacement at our servicing facilities, and has covered less than 30 km since the completion of this service. Previously looked after by Cristiano Michelotto during its time in Italy, when asked about the car recently, he remembered it well, remarking that it was a very clean example of its kind.
Ready to drive and enjoy, having been enjoyed and looked after as one would expect in the current owner tenure, it is a truly remarkable example of Ferrari’s iconic supercar.
The F40 remains available to be inspected at our facilities just outside of London.
