In 2002 Ferrari began production of the fastest road car they had ever made. Controversially named Enzo after the firms legendary founder, this 650bhp, 217mph supercar was the fourth in a line of ultra-high performance Ferrari's. The Enzo weighed in at 1365kg, a little heavier than Ferrari had hoped for but still light enough for 476bhp per tonne.
A normally aspirated V12 with an all alloy block formed the heart of the Enzo's 6-litre motor and was the first of a new generation of Ferrari engines. With 5998cc it returned to a four valve cylinder head and featured a variable length induction system that extended the length of the induction pipes from 340 to 430mm via hydraulic actuators. Also new was variable inlet and exhaust valve timing that helped produce 650bhp at 7800rpm, more than any previous Ferrari production car.
Performance figures were very impressive, 0-60 in 3.5 seconds and 0-125 in 9.5 making the Enzo the fastest car in production between 2002 and 2004. The most obvious F1-derived detail was surely that raised nose flanked by a pair of radiators located ahead of each front wheel. These directed hot air through vents to the upper body, thus preventing it merging with the underbody airflow that used fast air to generate even more downforce - as much as 775kg at 186mph! Complex under body active aerodynamics meant no need for a traditional large rear wing.
The cabin was a technological tour de force also, the most advanced of its day. A complex steering wheel housed controls for driving modes, traction control, a trip computer, reverse gear and wing angles, the upper rim incorporating five LED's that came on in 500rpm instalments after 5500rpm. Just 399 (+1)Enzo’s were made between 2002 and 2004, all of which were completed in left hand drive, the last car rolling off the production line in May 2004.
A surprising number of Enzos have been repainted in alternative colours during their lifetime as the vast majority were ordered in the standard colours of Rosso Corsa, Yellow or Black. As such an original, from the factory, Extra Campionario colour car (such as this) commands a significant premium; Original Extra Campionario colours were an option only made available to super VIP clients of the brand, more important than the already VIP Enzo buyers.
This example offered for sale is presented in a sought after "Extra Campionario" paint finish of Rosso Scuderia. Rarely seen on Enzos, Rosso Scuderia was a new (at the time) and more commonly used on the Scuderia’s Formula One cars of that period – making it even more special to Ferrari fans.
Ferrari built just 24 cars in this colour from the official 399(+1). In fact, the very special 400th car, that was built and then gifted to His Holiness Pope John Paul II by Ferrari and subsequently auctioned to benefit victims of the Southeast Asian tsunami was also painted in this very special hue. Of the other cars completed in this shade both Michael Schumacher’s personal car and Jean Todt’s cars were completed in Rosso Scuderia.
This specific car is understood to be unique worldwide. Factoring in a very special request, this example is one of just 6, or so, cars to have received painted lower trim all around from new. This ‘special order’ option included painted front valence, side sills and rear diffuser. The car remains in its original and factory specification of Rosso Scuderia, with Pelle Rosso hide, four-point harnesses in Rosso and a matching Rosso rev counter.
This example was first delivered to Switzerland on 15th April 2004 in this rare specification. During its time in Switzerland, the car was owned by Jean-Denis Délétraz of Geneva. Remaining in Switzerland until 2009, the car was then imported to Japan where it would remain with a single owner for 6 years. In 2015, the car was reimported to France. A year later in 2016, it was granted Ferrari Classiche certification confirming its unique specification.
In 2017, the example was purchased by DK on behalf of the current owner. Since then we have maintained the car and stored the car in our secure facility. Used sparingly, the car has covered just 13,800km from new. Complete with all books, Ferrari red book Classiche Certification, a detailed and complete history as well as a complete set of tools this example is available for viewing and supply immediately.
