In 2002 Ferrari began production of the fastest road car they had ever made. Controversially named Enzo after the firms legendary founder, this 650bhp, 217mph supercar was the fourth in a line of ultra-high performance Ferrari's. The Enzo weighed in at 1365kg, a little heavier than Ferrari had hoped for but still light enough for 476bhp per tonne.
A normally aspirated V12 with an all alloy block formed the heart of the Enzo's 6-litre motor and was the first of a new generation of Ferrari engines. With 5998cc it returned to a four valve cylinder head and featured a variable length induction system that extended the length of the induction pipes from 340 to 430mm via hydraulic actuators. Also new was variable inlet and exhaust valve timing that helped produce 650bhp at 7800rpm, more than any previous Ferrari production car.
Performance figures were very impressive, 0-60 in 3.5 seconds and 0-125 in 9.5 making the Enzo the fastest car in production between 2002 and 2004. The most obvious F1-derived detail was surely that raised nose flanked by a pair of radiators located ahead of each front wheel. These directed hot air through vents to the upper body, thus preventing it merging with the underbody airflow that used fast air to generate even more downforce - as much as 775kg at 186mph! Complex under body active aerodynamics meant no need for a traditional large rear wing.
The cabin was a technological tour de force also, the most advanced of its day. A complex steering wheel housed controls for driving modes, traction control, a trip computer, reverse gear and wing angles, the upper rim incorporating five LED's that came on in 500rpm instalments after 5500rpm. Just 399 (+1)Enzo’s were made between 2002 and 2004, all of which were completed in left hand drive, the last car rolling off the production line in May 2004.
A surprising number of Enzos have been repainted in alternative colours during their lifetime as the vats majority were ordered in the standard colours of Red, Yellow or Black. As such an original, from the factory, Extra Campionario colour car (such as this) commands a significant premium; Originally approximately just 20 cars were ordered and finished in Extra Campionario colours, and this was an option only made available to super VIP clients of the brand.
This example offered for sale is presented in the fantastically rare "Extra Campionario" paint colour of Grigio Alloy, and is believed to be 1 of just 2 cars built during the total run of 399 in this colour. The car remains in its original and factory specification of Grigio Alloy metallic, with Blu and Grey Schedoni Leather Interior, Nero harnesses and a Giallo rev counter.
Today, the car is accompanied by its original Certificate of Origin, a congratulatory letter from then Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo, images from production, owner’s manuals, the warranty booklet and leather pouch, a spare key, scale Enzo model, a toolkit and Schedoni carbon-fibre briefcase, a car cover and a battery charger.
It was first ordered by Ferrari France, Charles Pozzi S.A. on 24 October 2002. Less than three years later, the Enzo was delivered to its first and only owner via Charles Pozzi on 15 March 2005.
On 15 April of the same year, the car was registered in France and assigned licence number ’79 TAA 69’. A man appreciative of not only the Ferrari marque but also the quintessential model that is the Enzo, the owner of this example showed great restraint and stored the car for the majority of its life, putting less than 2,500 kilometres on its odometer.
In preparation of sale, the owner commissioned Rossocorsa, the official Ferrari dealer in Milan, Italy, to perform a major service on the Enzo. This service encompassed such things as replacing all filters, the battery, and all four tyres and their sensors, changing the oil and performing an electronic diagnosis of all the on-board controls. Upon arrival with ourselves, the clutch was replaced after a further inspection.
As Ferrari’s final mid-engined, non-hybrid hypercar, the Enzo will always live on in not only the marque’s record books but also in record books of connoisseurs the world over. To acquire one such as this example, with just one owner and less than 2,500 kilometres from new, in this exceptional colour combination is a truly rare opportunity.
This example can be supplied VAT free for export.
