In 1898, James Lansdown Norton founded Norton as a manufacturer of "fittings and parts for the two-wheel trade". With a keen passion to progress onto building bikes, the first Norton Motorcycle were produced in 1902 using French or Swiss engines. Norton's racing pedigree began soon after in 1907, when Rem Fowler won the very first Isle of Man TT on a Norton. Shortly after, wins at Brooklands and other European races helped cement Norton's reputation as a leading race and road bike constructor. Norton's racing dominance continued throughout both World Wars, winning the Isle of Man Senior TT race ten times and between 1930 and 1937, winning 78 out of 92 Grand Prix races.
In 1949, the twin cylinder Dominator was introduced. By 1951, the Dominator was available with a Featherbed frame, a more lightweight yet strong frame which immediately claimed success. Geoff Duke became world champion riding the Norton in both 350cc and 500cc classes. During the 1970's, with Japanese manufacturing thriving, the Norton much like many other British marques, was driven to the brink of extinction.
In January, 2015, the Norton Dominator made its return. Alongside the standard production run, Norton produced a limited run of just 200 Dominator SS models. The SS model features a race inspired lightweight hand-made aluminium fuel tank, carbon fibre air box, tail unit, front mudguard, fly screen and hugger as well as a polished yoke set and clock surrounds.
This exceptional example is No. 178 of the 200 produced, sold to its first and only private owner in 2017 first being UK registered on the 1st March. Having covered just 86 miles from new, this SS presents as one would imagine and comes accompanied by all of its original equipment and is fitted with the megaphone exhaust system made by Norton. With full UK registration, this highly desirable motorbike is ready to be used and enjoyed immediately by the next owner and is available for viewing at our showrooms based just outside London.
